Small caps round-up: Dee Valley, Eco City Vehicles, Rurelec,...

Date: Thursday 03 Jun 2010

LONDON (ShareCast) - Water utility Dee Valley saw profit before tax for the year rise from £3.1m to £6.6m, mainly due the £2.6m reduction in net finance costs. Revenue in the year ended 31 March 2010 increased by 3.9% to £20.8m.

"I am pleased to report that the year 2010/11 has commenced satisfactorily and current trading is in line with expectations," said chairman Graham Scott.

Total dividend per ordinary share rose to 55.5p per share from 52.7p each

Green car group Eco City Vehicles lifted 2009 revenue by 30% and narrowed its pre-tax loss thanks to strong demand for its London-licensed Mercedes Vito taxi.

New Vito unit sales more than tripled to 398 units in 2009 and production has been stepped up from 8 to 12 a week. The annual loss of £393,000 compared with £703,000 in 2008 on revenue of £24.7m.

Rurelec, which runs power plants in Latin America, trimmed its post-tax loss to £2.86m in 2009 from £4.15m the year before, while an extra £1m of admin costs increased the operating loss to £1.35m from £150,000.

But it is last month’s decision by Bolivia to nationalise Rurelec's controlling stake in Guaracachi, the country’s largest generator, that is of most interest.

The company says if Bolivia does not settle by 13 November to its satisfaction, it will have the matter settled by international arbitration where its claim will be based on fair market value which is far higher than the £50m calculated by reference to Bolivian book value of Guaracachi.

Jatropha plant grower Viridas saw losses before tax from continuing operations widen to £0.68m in 2009 from £0.45m the year before. Net cash resources at the end of the year stood at £0.66m after the company completed a £2.2m fund raising in 2009.

Despite the increased losses, the share price perked up on Thursday after the company said it is currently in discussions with a leading UK electricity generator with a view to negotiating an "off-take" agreement for the supply of 240,000 tonnes of biomass per annum.

Clean Air Power gained on news that the dual-fuel combustion technology developer has received an order from HAM Group for 10 Genesis EDGE Dual –Fuel installations in a deal worth about £200,000.

API Group, the specialist foils and packaging materials group, reported an £8.2m annual pre-tax loss compared with a profit of £2.2m last time.

Interactive gaming group Netplay TV slipped into the red last year but returned to the balck in the first quarter of the current year.

With exceptional items and share based payments excluded losses before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation totalled £0.85m compared to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of £2.43m the year before. First quarter EBITDA in 2010 was in positive territory, at £0.2m.

Revenue improved to £21.56m last year from £19.76m in 2008. Mobile gaming revenues in the first quarter were 10% higher than in the final quarter of 2009, the company said.
