JPMorgan Mid-Cap keeps divi options open

Date: Thursday 18 Feb 2010

LONDON (ShareCast) - JPMorgan Mid-Cap Investment Trust underperformed its benchmark index in the second half of 2009 but kept income investors sweet with a maintained dividend.

In the six months to 31 December the company achieved a total return on net assets per share of 24.2%, versus a 27.7% return on the FTSE 250 index (excluding investment trusts).

Net asset value per share (NAV) stood at 442p at the end of 2009, up from 352.4p at the end of 2008.

Post-tax revenue slumped to £1.36m from £3.28m in the second half of 2008 reflecting the reduced dividend payment made by the mid-cap companies in which the trust invests. The 2008 figures were also flattered to the tune of £1.2m by the VAT and associated interest recovered by the company in that period.

Gearing remained modest throughout the reporting period and ended the year at 111%. The board is seeking to renew the company’s £9.5, debenture, which is eligible for redemption after 1 December 2011.

Though many of the companies in which it has invested have cut dividends, JPMorgan Mid-Cap maintained its interim dividend at 5.5p. Chairman Andrew Barker warned, however, that ‘forecast revenue for the full year remains significantly depressed and, whilst the company does have substantial revenue reserves, the level of the final dividend will depend upon the board's assessment of the trends of dividend payouts by the midcap sector over the coming months.’

Corporate profit expectations for the current year appear to be very positive and the valuation of UK equities does not seem extreme by past standards,’ Barker added.
