Amazon to create 1,000 jobs at new Bristol warehouse

(ShareCast News) - US ecommerce giant Amazon will open a new warehouse in Bristol next year, hiring over 1,000 people in the process.
The Seattle-based company was planning to increase its operations in the UK even further, boosting its workforce to around 24,000 by the end of 2017.

Amazon has been criticised by many due for its tax practices in the UK, where it saw its 2016 bill was halved in comparison to the previous year despite revenue increasing.

The new 'fulfilment centre' would be be based at the Severn Beach area of the city, with the company searching for roles such as operations managers and IT specialists.

"There are several factors we consider when deciding on where to place a new fulfilment centre, and Bristol offers fantastic infrastructure and talented local people who we look forward to joining the Amazon team," said Amazon's director of UK customer fulfilment Stefano Perego.

According to Amazon, the company had invested £6.4bn in the UK since 2010, with further warehouses scheduled to be set up in Doncaster, Warrington and Tilbury this year.

Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti welcomed Amazon's decision to add a new warehouse in Bristol.

"It is fantastic news that Amazon is opening a new fulfilment centre in Severn Beach," said Lopresti. "This will bring more jobs to our area and offer careers with training opportunities, helping the local economy to grow."
