BT set to scrap pay-TV packages and offer monthly prime subscriptions

(Sharecast News) - Broadcaster BT is set to scrap pay-TV packages for monthly prime content subscriptions, granting the flexibility that other streaming services offer.

In a move to try to compete with Netflix and Disney+, BT will now offer prime content such as Premier League football on a monthly basis instead of attempting to lock customers into long-term contracts.

BT will offer new TV packages, such as for sport or entertainment, that customers can add, or drop, on a monthly basis.

BT's bolt-on monthly packages run from £10.0 for entertainment to £40.0 for "Big Sport".

Marc Allera, chief executive of BT's consumer division said: "Being flexible is more in tune with how customers want to consume content in a streaming world.

"For example, the race for the Premier League title may be over in a few weeks and once that is done some viewers may prefer to spend their money on movie, or entertainment, packages. Or if families are going abroad on holiday in the summer they may want to switch off a sports subscription."

"You could also see people spin-up [get more packages] given they can upgrade at will," he said. "We have to respond to how customers want to consume TV - it is what we have to do to remain relevant."

Marina Storti, Managing Director, NOW TV, said: "There has never been a more interesting and dynamic time for the entertainment industry than right now and we're so thrilled to be able to launch NOW TV on BT at such an exciting time.

"With NOW TV's range of passes, BT TV customers will be able to enjoy our latest award-winning shows, blockbuster movies and top quality sports content with complete flexibility, so that customers can pay for exactly what they want."

BT confirmed the new packages would launch on February 21st.
